Optional Pre-Orientation Activities
There are two optional activities that take place during the week before Orientation, which will enable you to get to know your classmates better and learn more about Yale School of Medicine.
- Participants who will be living in Harkness may move into their rooms as early as Tuesday, August 18.
- Both activities will begin with a Welcome BBQ at Harkness Hall on Thursday, August 20 at 5 o'clock.
MOOT (Medical Outdoor Orientation Trip)
MOOT (Medical Outdoor Orientation Trip)
MOOT is an old tradition at Yale. Led by experienced 2nd year medical students, MOOT brings new students out on the Appalachian Trail for a few days of bonding and orientation before classes begin.
MOOT is designed for all levels of experience. Those who have never understood the concept of sleeping on the ground, as well as skilled mountaineers, will find the trip rewarding and fun. Transportation and food will be provided, and equipment rentals are available.
S.A.Y. (Service at Yale)
S.A.Y. New Haven is a newer program, begun in 2003. S.A.Y. introduces incoming medical students to community service opportunities, while also providing a chance to discover the attractions of New Haven and opportunities to connect with classmates before medical school begins. Since S.A.Y. activities are local, participants live in their Harkness dorm room or wherever they have decided to live during the first semester.
