What is the “Cohen Mentorship”?

 

A program sponsored by the Yale Child Study Center (the Child Psychiatry Department) designed to expose medical students to the field of child development and psychiatry. As part of the program, you can:

 

  • Be paired with a mentorin child psychiatry based on your interests—activities that pairs have done in the past include shadowing, discussing cases, performing research, attending conferences and lectures, etc.

     

  • Attend monthly presentations and discussions—past topics have included Goth culture, autism, childhood schizophrenia, clinical cases, student experiences on the wards, and neurobiology of psychiatry

     

  • Attend clinical interviews at Winchester I(the inpatient child psychiatry unit) 

     

  • Shadow a child psychiatristin the Pediatric ED

     

  • Learn about or participate in researchat the world-renowned Yale Child Study Center

     

Who can participate?

 

Anyone! Students who participate are usually interested in: working with children, pediatrics, child development, psychiatry, child patient exposure, or mentoring with outstanding doctors early in medical school.

 

When will meetings occur throughout the year?

 

Meetings are typically held the first Tuesday of each month over a great dinner.

 

What is the time commitment?

 

Highly variable and determined by you and your schedule. Meetings are held once a month—you can come ever so often or every time! Some people meet every week with their mentor; others meet once a month or even less frequently.
