Welcome to Yale School of Medicine!

Congratulations!  Our Medical School Admissions Committee has completed its initial evaluation of your application, and you have been selected to come to the School for interviews.  We look forward to meeting you and helping you learn more about Yale School of Medicine.

Helpful information about the timing of interview appointments, transportation to New Haven, overnight accommodations, and the location of the admissions office will be found in this website, along with links to several useful web sites.

When are interviews held?

MD Applicants:  Interviews are completed in one day and are held on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays each week. All applicants must arrive at the Admissions Office by 8:45.  At that time, there will be an orientation meeting with the Director of Admissions.  Throughout the rest of the day there will be two formal interviews with members of the Admissions Committee as well as a brief presentation by a Financial Aid officer.  In the middle of the day, there will be a lunch-time "Faculty Meet and Greet" session with a member of the senior faculty, who will give a short presentation on his/her work, followed by a question and answer period.  After the Meet and Greet session, you will participate in a tour of the School. Interviewees can expect to complete their day by approximately 5:30. However, depending on the individual's interview schedule, some interviewees may finish their day a bit earlier.

MD/PhD Applicants:  Interviews for MD/PhD applicants are completed over a two day period and are held on Mondays and Tuesdays.  For those applicants who arrive in New Haven on Sunday night, there will be a welcome dinner with current MD/PhD students at 6:00 at BAR .  More information will be sent to applicants several days before their interview with contact information.  Applicants will be interviewed by two members of the MD Admissions Committee on Monday and two members of the MD/PhD Admissions Committee on Tuesday.  MD/PhD applicants must arrive at the Admissions Office on Monday at 8:45am.  On Monday evening, current MD/PhD students host an informal dinner where you can get to know each other better.  You should plan on completing your interview day on Tuesday at 4:30.  Over the course of the two days, applicants will also have time to meet informally with faculty members whose research interests you.  For more information about Informal Faculty Meetings and the entire MD/PhD interview process, please click here.

Where is the Admissions Office?

Your interview day will begin at the School of Medicine Admissions Office, located in Edward S. Harkness Memorial Hall D, 367 Cedar Street, at the corner of York Street, near Yale New Haven Hospital. (campus map) Enter the door facing Cedar Street, take the elevator to the second floor, and you will be here.  There are actually two buildings with the address of 367 Cedar Street. You want "Hall D", not "Hall A".  It is the taller of the two buildings and the door is not swipe card activated.  You can enter without a swipe card.

Can I stay overnight with a student?

If you would like to stay overnight with a volunteer student host, either in the student's dorm room or in an off-campus apartment, this can be arranged.  Please go to our Interview Hosting webpage and follow the instructions.  Keep in mind that you are welcome to stay with either an MD or an MD/PhD host.

What if I would prefer to stay in a hotel?

If you would prefer to stay overnight in a hotel, there are several in New Haven that you might consider. Premiere Hotel and Suites is a good option.  There is a free shuttle and it's quite inexpensive if you mention the "Yale Residency & Fellowship Applicants" rate.  Courtyard New Haven at Yale by Marriott (adjacent to the Yale campus, within walking distance of the School of Medicine - no shuttle service) offers special rates to our applicants. La Quinta- New Haven (further away but with free shuttle service to Yale) also offers special rates. When you make your reservation at either hotel, be sure to make it clear that you are coming for interviews at the School of Medicine. Omni New Haven Hotel at Yale is also convenient, but a bit more expensive. The best way to make reservations is by local telephone (see below), not the corporate 1-800 numbers.

I have a non-standard travel schedule.  Who should I tell?

Normally, the interview day runs from 8:45am to 5:30pm (for MD interviewees) and from 8:45am on Mondays through 4:00pm on Tuesdays (for MD/PhD interviewees)  If your travel schedule requires you to leave a bit earlier than normal, we can work around that.  Please complete the travel survey if you have not already done so:https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/ysmtravel

Where can I park my car?

If you are driving, there are a couple of convenient choices for parking. (1) Public parking is available at Air Rights Garage, at the intersection of York Street and Frontage Road, next door to the admissions office and easily reached from Highways 95 & 91 - see map. (2) Less expensive (but slower) valet parking is available at Yale New Haven Hospital. Pull into the circular drive on York Street between Cedar Street & Frontage Road and leave your car with the valet attendant.

Can I get to New Haven by train?

If you are coming to New Haven via AMTRAK or Metro-North Railroad, we are about 5 minutes away from the train station by taxi. Tell the driver to take you to 367 Cedar Street.

What is the best way to fly to New Haven?

USAirways flies directly to Tweed New Haven Airport (15 minutes away) from many areas, but the flights are often relatively expensive. Bradley International Airport near Hartford (45 minutes away) is usually the best combination of convenience and cost. LaGuardia and JFK (at least 1.5 hours away) are sometimes cheaper, but travel to New Haven from the New York airports is sometimes hectic because of heavy traffic. Newark Airport is often the cheapest, but transportation to New Haven is long and difficult. Because of this, we do not recommend Newark Airport.

How do I get to Yale from the airport?

If you fly directly to New Haven, we are about 15 minutes away from Tweed New Haven Airport by taxi. Tell the driver to take you to 367 Cedar Street at the Yale School of Medicine. From Bradley International and the New York airports, the most convenient way to get to New Haven is via Connecticut Limousine. You do not need a reservation. Just go to the Connecticut Limousine counter in the airport's ground transportation area to purchase a seat on the next bus (not limousine!) for New Haven. When you arrive at the Connecticut Limousine station in New Haven, take a 5 minute taxi ride to the Admissions Office at 367 Cedar Street. For further information, including schedules and fares, go the the Connecticut Limousine web site.

What time should I book my flight?

Keep in mind when you are planning your airline travel that Bradley International Airport is at least 45 minutes (plus traffic) from the medical school and JFK and LaGuardia are even further.  Please do not book your departure flight any earlier than 6:30 or 7:00pm.  This should give you plenty of time to complete your interview day and get to the airport with enough time for security check-in.  If you absolutely MUST book an earlier flight, we can usually accommodate you by scheduling your interviews earlier in the day.  If this is the case, please complete the travel survey if you have not already done so:https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/ysmtravel.
