MOOT - Medical Outdoor Orientation Trip

Questions? Please email moot@yale.edu.

Registration forms are found at the bottom of this page.

MOOT is an old tradition at Yale.  Led by experienced 2nd year medical students, MOOT brings new students out on the Appalachian Trail for a few days of bonding and orientation before classes begin.

MOOT is designed for all levels of experience: those who have never understood the concept of sleeping on the ground as well as skilled mountaineers will find the trip rewarding and fun. Transportation, food and group gear will be provided, and certain personal equipment can be borrowed.

MOOT leaders are enthusiastic second year medical students who love the outdoors, like to meet the first years, and have been trained in SOLO wilderness first aid and CPR - after all, we will one day be doctors! MOOT leaders will help ease the adjustment to the outdoors and to Yale; after all, we did complete one year!  At least two leaders will accompany each group.

WHEN IS MOOT?

MOOT is scheduled for Friday, August 22nd - Monday, August 25th on the Appalachian Trail in southwestern Massachusetts and northwestern Connecticut.

On Thursday, August, 21st, we will have a picnic dinner outside Harkness dormitory at 367 Cedar Street for all MOOT participants and leaders (and our SAY counterparts). At this dinner you will meet other first years and trip leaders. You will need to have your pack ready by this time so that your leaders can make sure you are not missing any vital equipment. Friday morning we will have a light breakfast and head out by bus to the trailhead. You will be back by Monday night, in plenty of time to get ready for registration and the White Coat Ceremony on Tuesday.

If you are planning on moving into Harkness, we have made arrangements with the dormitory staff so that you may begin to move in on Tuesday, August 19th. You will be able to pick up your key in the Harkness office inside the lobby of the dormitory at this time.

WHEN DO I NEED TO SIGN UP FOR MOOT?

Return by July 1st (or ASAP for summer waitlist acceptances) the MOOT medical insurance forms #1 & #2, signed consent form, and the registration form along with a check for your fee, payable to MOOT.  You must have a physician (a real one... you're not there just yet) fill out your health information form, and we recommend that you fill out the Yale Health Plan's physician form at the same visit.

HOW ABOUT MY SIGNIFICANT OTHER?

We hope to have a trip specifically for medical students and their significant others. Each of you must submit separate copies of all paperwork (medical insurance forms 1 & 2, signed consent, and registration with payment).

WHAT ARE THE FEES?

The participant fee is $100 per person and covers food, group equipment, transportation, support, and leader training.  Personal gear rental fees have been eliminated for the 2008 trips.  MOOT is a non-profit, student-run group, and all fees go directly to the costs of the trip.

ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW?

The meals on the trail will consist of vegetarian foods that do not spoil, such as oatmeal, fruit, pita bread, peanut butter, macaroni and cheese, rice, and some vegetables. Please bring any snacks you want to supplement the meals we provide.

No alcohol, no drugs, no cigarettes, no firearms.  No iPods, no makeup, no perfume.

If you register but for some reason learn afterwards that you cannot participate in MOOT, please let us know immediately by emailing moot@yale.edu
