Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA)

The Student National Medical Association (SNMA)is the largest, independent medical student organization focused on the needs and concerns of minority medical students. It was established in 1964 by students at Meharry andHowardMedicalCollegesand now represents over five thousand medical and premedical students of color in over 125 medical schools.
SNMA Mission Statement
- To create an atmosphere wherein professional excellence and moral principles can find fullest expression, and to disseminate information relative to minority concerns in the field of medicine and medical education.
- To develop and implement workable programs for the provision of better urban and rural health care, as well as for minority youth to encourage their entrance into the health professions.
- To provide national leadership in the development of legislative policies important within the minority and underrepresented community.
- To promote increases in the levels of minority student recruitment, admission, and retention in schools training health professionals.
- To protect and fight against prejudicial and culturally biased practices in all arenas.
The Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA)is a Latino student group representing health professions students from the northeast region of theUnited States.Its mission is to recruit Latinos into higher education, educate the public and one another about Latino health issues, advocate for increased Latino representation in health related areas, and promote awareness about social, political and economic issues as they relate to Latino health. It also serves to create a support network for Latino students. This group was formed in 1970 in response to Latino medical students demanding a voice. Today, there are approximately eleven active medical school chapters, and 200 medical student members in the area betweenWashington,D.C.andMaine. New chapters and members are being added every year.
