The Youth Science Enrichment Program Welcomes You!

The Youth Science Enrichment Program is a student volunteering group comprised of students fromYaleUniversity.  It is one of the major pipeline programs of Yale's chapter of the Student National Medical Association and Boricua Latino Health Organization (Yale SNMA/BLHO). This program aims to coordinate ‘hands on’ learning activities involving elementary students in theNew Havenpublic school system, and through these activities:

  • Increase minority elementary students’ exposure to science
  • Motivate students to seek careers in scientific disciplines
  • Improve student performance in science classes
  • Introduce students to positive role models in the science fields through mentorship
  •  Make learning a more enjoyable and interactive experience.

We don't just want the students to be exposed to health professions students, but to also build relationships. In order to provide the students with individual attention each class will be led by two student teachers with two group mentors. This organization enables bonding and relationship building between the fourth graders and the health professions students who may serve as role models for them.

We teach at the Hill Central Academy, located at140 Dewitt Street,New Haven. Our sessions run throughout the year from Mid-October to about the beginning of April. We cover health science related topics such as the various anatomical body systems. We also teach public health related topics such as the importance of nutrition and exercise. The YSEP program can be potentially demanding and/or draining if you are unaccustomed to working with this age group.Past volunteers, though, have all had wonderful experiences with the students and have felt that the program was the best part of their week.

We invite you to browse this website and see for yourself what we're about. If you're interested in learning more about the program or about volunteering with us, simply email us and we will be happy to speak with you about the program.
